New "Belong, Connect, Achieve" Campaign Represents Chamber Benefits
The Communications Committee of the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce unveiled their new "Belong, Connect, Achieve" campaign at the Chamber's Annual Dinner on Wednesday, January 27. The campaign showcases Chamber members whose affiliation with the Chamber has allowed them to belong to the local business community, connect with friends and business associates, and achieve business success.
The Communications Committee selected ten Chamber members to be spotlighted in the campaign for their compelling success stories. These members will be spotlighted throughout the year and will appear in several media including video, printed materials at the Chamber's monthly events, and in person at the monthly luncheon. The ten selected members are:
Greg France, Athena GTX
Angie Monthei, Complete Wellness Chiropractic
Bill Gentsch, NorthStar Photography
Tom Narak, WDM Community Schools
Kurt Pearson, Compass Financial
Lori Taschner, Two Men And A Truck
Edye Beckerman, Flemings Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar
Kathy Fortune, PC Print Center
Stacy Schoop, Gateway Market
Paul Kirpes, TPG Companies
Each storyteller will be featured during a specific month in 2010 beginning in February. During their respective month, each storyteller will have a personalized trading card highlighting their BCA story. These cards will be available at all Chamber functions during that month (monthly luncheon, Breakfast B4 Business, Ribbon Cuttings, etc.) However, once the month ends, that particular trading card will be "retired", and a new card from a different storyteller will become available. We are encouraging everyone to begin collecting all 10 trading cards throughout the entire year. For those diligent in collecting all 10 trading cards, a drawing will be held in January 2011. One lucky winner will receive $1,000 in gift items and gift certificates to Chamber retail businesses, PLUS five hours of business consulting services valued at $1,000.
The campaign is the culmination of months of work by the Communications Committee, Board of Directors, local businesses and the honorees who shared their stories on camera and in print. The Communications Committee consists of Rose Breuss (co-chair), Kay Rosene (co-chair), Jason LaCava, Julie Deeds, Jeremy Schultz, Julie Weeks, Bill Gentsch, Ryan Meyers, Deb Bengston, Lynn McRoberts, JP Sing and Linda Hulleman.
For more information on the "Belong, Connect, Achieve" campaign, you may attend any Chamber event or visit www.wdmchamber.org/bca.

WDMLA Gets a Lesson on Accountability
Melynda DeCarlo and Tammy Rogers from the Meyvn Group returned to the West Des Moines Leadership Academy on January 21, 2010 to lead another informative, interactive session on leadership. The January session focused on Accountability Coaching, the idea that there is a level of minimum expectations regarding behavior and tasks in the workplace.
Accountability Coaching focuses on three levels of performers and how each level can impact an organization. One of the keys to having a strong group is dealing with problems as soon as they become evident. As soon as the leader ignores the problem it enables that person to continue the behavior. Having a clearly defined list of expectations can ensure that all members are performing at a sufficient level.
A leader is defined as someone who is a part of a group and has a position of influence. Even though they might not have anyone reporting to them and might not be considered a "leader" in the workplace, they could be a leader among their professional organization or nonprofit they volunteer for. One of the best aspects of the Leadership Academy is the immediate application to each individual participant's situation, whether they have no direct reports or are the manager, and the ability for all participants to learn from one another sharing leadership experiences.
Following the conclusion of the session with the Meyvn Group, the class headed to Fleming's for a working dinner to discuss how the West Des Moines Leadership Academy can become the very best and the future WDMLA alumni association. For more information regarding the West Des Moines Leadership Academy, visit www.wdmleaders.org or contact Julie Weeks at the Chamber by calling 515.225.6009 or sending an e-mail to julie@wdmchamber.org.
