West Des Moines Leaders: They're Out There
The inaugural class of the West Des Moines Leadership Academy (WDMLA) is quickly approaching their graduation on June 4th. The first year has gone by in a whirl!! Our first year's accomplishments have served as a great spring board for our new Academy's future.
Serving on the formative board of the WDMLA this year reminds me of a story my good friend Stan Gibson (Senior VP of Wells Fargo, Corporate Property Group) likes to tell...
One sunny afternoon in some imaginary field, a hiker spots the figure of a man running towards him with harried purpose. The hiker can see the sweaty man is out of breath and concerned. He slows down long enough to wheeze out a question to the hiker.
"Say there buddy" puffs the winded man. "...have you seen a well dressed group of young folks running with purpose through these fields?"
"Well no sir" says the hiker,"...but why do you ask?"
"I am the group's leader and I need to catch up with them and tell them where they need to go"!!
And so it has gone for our formative board and curriculum committee members this year. Forming a Board, selecting the inaugural class members, planning nine months of "curriculum" and keeping up with this year's class of thirty has been a wonderful experience. We have learned a lot and are actively planning next year's Academy offerings. While we are tempted to rest on the "high" of this year's class accomplishments we must share a timely urgency with all Chamber members. Next year's class is shaping up as I write.
Designed to be a metro area complement to the mission of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute, the "WDMLA" offers exposure to West Des Moines's unique part of the fabric of greater Des Moines. Selected participants meet to develop and enhance leadership skills, gain inspiration for increased participation and service for the betterment of the West Des Moines community in the context of our entire region. With a simple click at www.wdmleaders.org you can access all the critical information regarding the vision, mission and fun facts regarding WDMLA.
Nominations for next year's class are open until May 31. Applications will be received up until June 30th. Class will begin in September. I encourage every Chamber member to consider participation in the Academy. You will learn about West Des Moines History, Schools/Education, Civic, Governmental, Charitable and Economic Development inner workings. You will meet many of the past and current leaders of our community. You will participate in leadership skill development sessions with a "street value" well beyond the class fee. As well, you will build new alliances, create new friendships and enjoy some of the finest food samplings offered throughout West Des Moines.
Give it a try!! The success of the Chamber depends on its members and the energetic leadership of people willing to step up and challenge others to reach for a new level of giving and exchange. The right time is "now"!

Learning About West Des Moines' History of Growth
The West Des Moines Leadership Academy (WDMLA) met on Thursday, April 9 in a session devoted to economic development in West Des Moines. Clyde Evans, the city's Director of Community and Economic Development, gave Academy members an hour-long presentation on the city's economic development from its days of railroading and coal-mining to today's retail and commercial success. Clyde is no stranger to Academy members, having conducted its bus tour of the city in October 2008, but this month's session at the Drury Inn was an opportunity to learn more about the city's history of economic development and ask questions. Academy member Michael Schneider also presented a recap of the recent class project excursion to the full Academy and WDMLA board members present. On Saturday, April 4, several Academy members organized and chaperoned a trip that sent 30 youngsters to a performance of Sideways Stories from Wayside School at the Des Moines Playhouse. The children enjoyed a lunch, the performance and afterwards got to tour backstage and meet members of the cast and crew. Many children thought the day was an amazing experience! The final session of the Academy will be Thursday, May 14 at Tero International, culminating in a panel discussion on the state of the arts and culture in West Des Moines. The graduation ceremony for the inaugural class will be held Thursday, June 4 at Glen Oaks Country Club. Many nominations have already come in for next year's class and application letters have been sent out, but nominations are still being accepted until Sunday, May 31. If you know someone who would be an ideal fit for the Academy, visit www.wdmleaders.org/enroll and download a nomination form. Application forms are also available at the same webpage. The Academy's inaugural year was a time of exceptional learning, and the Class of 2009-2010 is in for the same experience!

As you know, if you were around this area last year, West Des Moines' A-MAY-Zing Days makes for a truly amazing month! Organizations, companies, and individuals all come together with a month-long series of fun-filled activities and programs designed to showcase our community at its finest! West Des Moines Development Corporation is no exception. Plans are set for the second annual WDM Jobs Expo, organized by the WDM Development Corp. and Iowa Workforce Development. These organizations are actively seeking both employers looking for quality employees - and the job seekers to fill the vacant positions.
The WDM Jobs Expo will take place on Thursday, May 28th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Sheraton West Des Moines Hotel. Plans are in place for up to 60 companies to participate. Four on-site seminars will be presented throughout the day to job seekers on topics such as writing and critiquing resumes; interviewing skills; presentation style; and networking tips. Booth spaces filled up quickly last year, and due, in part, to the success of last year's event, we expect even greater response for this year.
