West Des Moines Leadership Academy - Why Not?
The 2009-10 West Des Moines Leadership Academy (WDMLA) class is quickly approaching their June graduation. Their energy has inspired us all year long. This year's accomplishments give us great confidence that we are doing the right things and... doing them well. Progress has been measurable and gratifying. We have formed a full board with operational committees. We have created deeper curriculum that offers critical leadership exposure, dialogue and skill development. We have attracted a wonderful class who is networked, motivated and inspired.
However, we will only take a moment to savor a wonderful year because it is now time to select next year's class!!
Applications will be received up until June 30th. Our third class will begin in September. I encourage every Chamber member to consider participation in the Academy. You will learn about West Des Moines history, Schools/Education, Civic, Governmental, Charitable and Economic Development inner workings. You will meet many of the past and current leaders of our community. You will participate in leadership skill development sessions with a "street value" well beyond the class fee. As well, you will build new alliances, create new friendships and enjoy some of the finest food samplings offered throughout West Des Moines.
Designed to be a metro area complement to the
mission of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute, the "WDMLA" offers exposure to West Des Moines's unique part of the fabric of greater Des Moines. Selected participants meet to develop and enhance leadership skills, gain inspiration for increased participation and service for the betterment of the West Des Moines community in the context of our entire region. With a simple click at www.wdmleaders.org you can access all the critical information regarding the vision, mission and fun facts regarding WDMLA.

WDMLA's April Leadership Lesson
The April session of the West Des Moines Leadership Academy gathered at the West Des Moines Chamber's Pacesetter member, GuideOne Insurance! The session began with leadership training from Todd McDonald of ATW Training, focusing on selling ideas. Todd McDonald facilitated small group discussions with members of the academy, focusing on real-life examples members of the class have faced in the last week when trying to sell their ideas to others. Then the class focused on how members have been able to overcome those obstacles. The core of the leadership training boiled down to "You, Action, Words." The leadership training session of the class was just another example of how the West Des Moines Leadership Academy gives real-life, practical ideas to leaders to take back and apply in their work and community leadership roles.
The second half of the April session featured a leadership panel with leaders in the West Des Moines community. The panel
included Rowena Crosbie of Tero International, Mike Householder of Lutheran Church of Hope, Forrest Ridgway of Bike World and Dave Vellinga of Mercy Medical Center. This was an opportunity for these leaders to share practical advice to up-and-coming leaders in the community. Topics ranged from how these leaders want their leadership legacy to be, leading a balanced life, books they have found most practical and how the current economic situation has affected how they lead; in addition, members of the class where able to interact with the panelists during a question and answer session.
The West Des Moines Leadership Academy is now accepting applications for the Class of 2010-2011. For more information regarding the West Des Moines Leadership Academy and how you can apply, visit www.wdmleaders.org or contact Julie Weeks at the Chamber by calling 515.225.6009 or sending an e-mail to julie@wdmchamber.org.

Business of the Month - Iowa Sleep Disorders Clinic

These sleep doctors will put
you to sleep.

With the realization of being laid off from work, investments vanishing, and an overall uncertainty of "what's next", it is no wonder people can't get a good night's sleep. Sleep disorders affect nearly two thirds of our population. There is a group of physicians in West Des Moines who specialize only in sleep. They help people get their lives back on track.
The Iowa Sleep Disorders Center specializes in the evaluation and treatment of over 80 different sleep disorders in adults and children. Established in 1991 by Dr. Steven Zorn, the West Des Moines Iowa Sleep Center is fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The center meets the most rigorous standards as a medical center of excellence in the management of sleep disorders.
If you suspect you or a loved one may be dealing with a sleep disorder, ask your primary care provider to make a referral for you, or you may call Iowa Sleep directly to make an appointment yourself. Daytime, evening and Saturday hours are available to accommodate tight schedules. Patients can be seen for initial consultations usually within a week. Many people are concerned if they have to have an overnight sleep study. Patients are typically diagnosed and treated without requiring a sleep study which is called a Polysomnogram or PSG.
If you are not getting the quantity and quality of sleep you feel you need, contact the Iowa Sleep Disorders Center. They claim to have Iowa's most caring sleep doctors. Go to (www.iowasleep.com) and see for yourself.
For questions or additional information, contact Iowa Sleep anytime at: info@iowasleep.com or call during regular business hours.
