Greater Des Moines Partnership's DM/DC Trip Coming Up in June
We have a lot of great things happening in West Des Moines and in the West Des Moines Chamber. With that said, we are also a part of the greater Des Moines area and the Greater Des Moines Partnership. This allegiance to regionalism is good for all of us. One very important and unique regional activity sponsored by the Greater Des Moines Partnership is their annual DC trip.
Leaders from across Central Iowa are planning their annual advocacy trek to Washington, D.C. for DM/DC 2010 as the trip is called this year. The trip is June 9th through June 11th. It will be the 31st year that the Greater Des Moines Partnership in conjunction with metro chambers has sponsored a lobbying trip to support a variety of agendas important to the Greater Des Moines area. These include: Healthcare, Energy, Financial Markets, Education, Immigration, Tax, Trade Transportation, Economic Development and Strong Communities.
Last year, 173 business, civic and community leaders joined the Partnership in this trip to lobby Congress and the administration for support for projects and policies important to the vitality and economic growth of Central Iowa. This lobbying group is the largest group from Iowa to visit the Capitol.
There are many benefits to participating in this trip. Networking with other local business and civic leaders, meeting members of our congressional delegation, and listening to informative breakout sessions are just a few of them. This is all done in our Nation's capitol where you have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and significance of Washington D.C. This year there will also be an evening at Georgetown Harbour hosted by the regional affiliates.
As a member of the Greater Des Moines Partnership contingent, we are making a statement of unity and one voice for Metro area projects and issues to our Senators and Representatives. As West Des Moines Chamber members, we attend in support of our city and community and the specific WDM projects we are looking for our DC reps to possibly fund. Congressional members from Iowa will be there to address meal-time sessions and lead discussion panels. Workshops and meetings address focus topics and allow opportunities for debate and advocacy.
As members of the West Des Moines Chamber and the Greater Des Moines Partnership, you are welcomed to join in this important, fun and exciting trip. For more information, visit www.desmoinesmetro.com/dctrip.

WDMLA's FINAL Session
The final session of the West Des Moines Leadership Academy was held on Thursday, May 20, 2010 with the focus on team building. The class met in the social room at Sacred Heart Catholic Church as the facility provided a unique venue and plenty of space for the team building activities and dinner later in the evening. The program, facilitated by Tammy Rogers and Melynda DeCarlo of the Mevyn Group, allowed particpants to discover how teams develop, collaborate, communicate and solve problems. They also learned how individual and team behaviors impact results. It was an afternoon of engaged and hands-on learning. The evening portion provided a special setting as each class member was encouraged to invite one guest for the final dinner event. Spouses, partners, bosses, co-workers and BFFs joined the class for a sumptious candle light 5-course dinner. Particpants savored delicious appetizers during a pre-dinner reception and then feasted on spinach salad and a medley of Bonnie's Homemade Pesto Lasagna, George Formaro's Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Gorgonzola Cream Sauce, and Grilled Shrimp with Feta Cheese and Olives. The meal was capped off with a selection of tempting desserts including the best-ever bread pudding with Irish Cream Sauce, Flourless Chocolate Cake adorned with mint & strawberries and Spring's Sweet Lemon Bars. It was without doubt a night to remember! The second class of the West Des Moines Leadership Academy will graduate today at Des Moines Golf & County Club. The ceremonies, sponsored by Iowa Health System, begin at 4 p.m. Keynote address will be given by the Honorable Mary Kramer. The public is invited - please contact Julie at the Chamber office (225-6009) to RSVP.
