Chris VoggesserDC Trip 2009

The 30th year for The Greater Des Moines Partnership's lobbying trip on June 10 - 12 included 173 of Central Iowa's business, civic, and community leaders.  The West Des Moines Chamber, City of West Des Moines, Polk County and West Des Moines Schools represented you well. The 2009 agenda focused on infrastructure, human capital, and quality of life in a unified effort to promote regional economic growth that will benefit our members and the citizens of West Des Moines.

Once again, this trip has proven to me that working together on priorities will strengthen our overall region.  We definitely make an impact in Washington as a collective group working together and in these economic times we are better suited for success by doing so.  Now we all just have to remember to look for ways to collaborate and share ideas at home.

The 2009 Congressional Leadership luncheons featured presentations from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH).  All seven members of the Iowa Congressional delegation - Sen. Chuck Grassley, Sen. Tom Harkin, Cong. DC Trip 2009Leonard Boswell, Cong. Tom Latham, Cong. Steve King, Cong. Dave Loebsack, and Cong. Bruce Braley -addressed the group at the Thursday breakfast.  Secretary of Agriculture and former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack spoke at the Congressional staff briefing on Friday morning.

As in past years, collaboration is key; this is why the West Des Moines Chamber Board of Directors is looking at many opportunities to strengthen the Chamber and add value to your membership.  We are committed to working with the City of West Des Moines, West Des Moines Development Corporation, West Des Moines School District and The Greater Des Moines Partnership.  This allows us to provide opportunities for our members that makes the West Des Moines Chamber an easy choice and provides programs and opportunities for growth.  Whether you are a large or small company you can rest assured that your investment in the West Des Moines Chamber is well worth it.

I hope that all of you have a happy and safe 4th of July celebration.  Don't forget to remember your veterans and thank all of those that fought for the freedom that allows you to be a West Des Moines Chamber member.  Thank you for choosing us.  In closing, next year's D.C. trip is scheduled for June 9-11, 2010.  I hope to see you there.

WDMLAWDMLA Ends A Successful Year With Graduation

The 30 members of the West Des Moines Leadership Academy's inaugural year formally graduated in a ceremony on Thursday, June 4 at Glen Oaks Country Club. Many Chamber and City officials attended, including current Mayor Steve Gaer and WDMLA - Mayorformer Mayor Gene Meyer, both of whom conducted lectures for Academy members during the nine-month session. It was a real treat to visit again with community leaders who had talked to the group and helped make the Academy successful.

Bernie Saggau, former Executive Director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, was the keynote speaker and delivered an energetic speech on leadership, learning and life. His keynote capped a WDMLA Gradstreak of excellent lectures on leadership delivered by several coaches and experts including Mitch Matthews, Todd McDonald, Christine Meggison, Deb Rinner and many others.

But the highlight of the evening was the speeches from the Academy graduates-each graduate spoke briefly about his or her goals for future service to the WDMLA - Glen Oakscommunity. A variety of community and non-profit organizations were named, each one having sparked something in at least one Academy member. The fact that there are 30 graduates this year means that a lot of groups and organizations will benefit from this outpouring of volunteerism and service.

Honor FlightHonor Flight Des Moines

On August 11, 2009 approximately 400 Iowa WWII Veterans will participate in a non-profit program called Honor Flight

The Veterans will fly from Des Moines to Dulles Airport and be transported to Washington, DC by bus.  Once they arrive in DC, they will tour the WWII, Korean and Vietnam Memorials and visit Arlington Cemetery to view the Changing of the Guard.

This is a wonderful opportunity for these Veterans.  Many have never been to DC to see these memorials.  Emotions run very high for these Veterans and their families.  They have served our country and are very proud men and women.

Curb it cartStart Using Your Curb It! Carts

The new Curb It! cart program will begin July 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 in West Des Moines (on the regular recycling pick up day). We know residents have had their carts for a while, so wanted to remind you of the new pick up day so you can put out your cart instead of the bin. We also want to remind you that the carts will be picked up every other week instead of weekly, as in the past.

Quick tips for recycling:
·         For a list of materials that can be recycled, check out the sticker on the lid of your cart or click here.

·         For missed picks up, cart exchanges and replacements, or any other cart issue, call Waste Management at 24-GREEN (244-7336).

·         Cart placement is important.  Be sure to keep three feet between your recycling cart and your garbage cart, yard bags, mail box or any other permanent structures.  The arm on the automated collection truck needs this space to pick up your new Curb It! recycling cart.

If you have any additional questions, please contact Metro Waste Authority at 244-0021. Metro Waste Authority (MWA) is an award-winning regional government agency that coordinates recycling programs for its member communities and is a leader in many environmental issues in Central Iowa.
