Chamber Ambassadors?
The few, the proud, the welcoming, . . . of course I'm talking about the West Des Moines Chamber ambassadors.
Most likely you have seen the "Blue Jacket Brigade" in action. It might have been celebrating with a new business at a ribbon cutting, welcoming a new member at a Chamber event, or thanking an existing member with a "Sweet Thank You" visit.
I have had the privilege to be a Chamber ambassador for three years and to be the ambassador chair this year. I receive several questions about our role.
Why does the Chamber have ambassadors?
Currently, the Chamber has almost 600 members and continues to grow. It takes many volunteers to make it run smoothly. The ambassadors are the most visible of these many volunteers.
What is the role of an ambassador?
The ambassadors are the welcoming arm of the Chamber -- whether it's "welcoming" a new member at a ribbon cutting or "welcoming" new and current members at our luncheons, breakfasts, business after hours or other special events. Since we are a large organization we want people to get involved, to have the opportunity to meet others, and to start building relationships.
What is the time commitment?
Ambassadors are volunteers, but there is an expectation that you are present and active at 60 percent of Chamber functions. But, we also realize, it is not a one-size fits all job. Each ambassador annually completes a time and talent questionnaire to choose which ambassador duties work best for their schedule.
Sounds like a big commitment, what are the benefits?
First and foremost, ambassadors are firm believers in the Chamber and want to share this enthusiasm. We have seen our involvement in the Chamber translate into success for our businesses and our community. People like to do business with people they know, like and trust. Being an ambassador provides golden opportunities to build these relationships.
If your business is investing resources in membership and sponsorships, an ambassador puts a personal touch on that investment, creating a network and good public relations for your company.
And, not just business relationships are formed but also personal friendships. Throughout the year the ambassadors gather socially at a golf outing, meet quarterly for lunch, and participate in the Golden Circle Games, to name a few.
Do I have to wear the blue jacket?
YES! We like to joke about the blue jackets, but they are very important. It tells the new business owner at a ribbon cutting we're here to support you, welcome you, and thank you for your Chamber membership. At a networking event, a new member can easily find us and count on us to start making introductions with them.
We have a great group of ambassadors representing our Chamber. I would be remiss if I didn't use this opportunity to give them a big THANK YOU. Their attendance, commitment, and involvement with the Chamber is exemplary.
We are always accepting ambassador applications. Currently our team is full, but there is usually some turnover. But, also keep in mind that just because you are not an official "ambassador" does not preclude you from attending events such as a ribbon cutting. All members are always welcome at all events. Use these occasions to welcome a new fellow-chamber member and get started building your relationships.
If we haven't had the opportunity yet to meet you, look for us at our next event. We look forward to welcoming you and getting you involved with our great Chamber.

West Des Moines Leadership Academy Celebrates 2010 Commencement
On June 3, thirty-one members of the 2010 West Des Moines Leadership Academy class graduated at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club This was the second class of the Academy to graduate. Many officials attended, including U.S. Congressman Leonard Boswell, West Des Moines Mayor Steve Gaer and West Des Moines Chamber President, Chris Voggesser.
Mary Kramer, former Iowa State Senator and Ambassador to Barbados, was the keynote speaker and delivered an inspiring speech on leadership, learning and life. Her keynote capped a streak of excellent lectures on leadership delivered by several coaches and experts including The Mevyn Group, Todd McDonald, Deb Rinner, Monte Wyatt, Brian Abeling and many others.
Each year, the class is charged to identify, develop and execute a class project with an end result benefitting our community. This year's class selected the Des Moines Area Religious Council's nine emergency food pantries as the benefactors for the project. A family-friendly, miniature golf event, "Putting Your Best Food FOREward" was held May 1st. Admission charged to play the creative holes was either in money or non-perishable food items. In addition to the truckload of food collected, the class proudly presented DMARC with a check for $13,500. Great job, class members! Now a tradition at the WDMLA commencement, and certainly a highlight of the evening were the "mini" speeches from the Academy graduates - as each graduate spoke briefly about his or her goals for future service to the community. A variety of community and non-profit organizations were named, each one having sparked something in at least one Academy member. The fact that there are 31 graduates this year means that a lot of groups and organizations will benefit from this outpouring of volunteerism and service. If you would like more information on the West Des Moines Leadership Academy, please visit www.wdmleaders.org. or call Julie Weeks at the WDM Chamber office, 515-225-6009.

Purple Heart Highway Tour
On July 22, 2010, the Purple Heart Highway Collaborative will be hosting a bus tour of the Purple Heart Highway (Highway 5/65) from West Des Moines to Altoona. The tour will begin at 3pm with a short introduction in the Council Chambers, and will conclude at 4:30pm at Prairie Meadows with a dessert reception. If interested in attending, please contact Samantha at scarlson@strategicamerica.com or call 515-453-2068.
Since 2008, the City of West Des Moines, along with representatives from the cities of Des Moines, Carlisle, Pleasant Hill, Norwalk, Warren County, and Polk County have been meeting to talk about ways to jointly market the Highway. The group has secured two Prairie Meadows grants in that effort. Besides the bus tour, the grant award has been used to create a website, which will be unveiled during the introduction to the tour. The group is also initiating a discussion about obtaining an interstate classification for the road. |
