Nicole HintonWhat is a Chamber?

In a recent board of director's retreat, we shared stories of chamber members' experiences, both with the West Des Moines Chamber as well as several other Chambers.

What did we learn? Here are some highlights:
*Some people are unsure of the role and function of a Chamber (We grow the business community!)

*We could use more creativity at our events to make networking easier and more fun

*Our renewal rate has been phenomenal - atta Chamber!

*It is tough as a new member to get traction in a new group

We are being proactive with this information and taking action steps. For example, you will see your WDM Chamber become more focused on getting our new members connected and involved. This will be done through programming, but I personally would like to enlist your help as a current member in reaching out to new members to help them feel welcome. That relationship building is a primary reason we are all active in the Chamber. And even though we all gravitate to those we know at events, connecting with new members is a great way to grow business.

With our accreditation under our belt, our excellent renewal rate and a growing staff, we are in the driver's seat toward more success for the West Des Moines business community. Seeing Microsoft chose West Des Moines and having new entities like Gold's Gym join the Chamber before they even open their doors is a testament to the strength of this business community.

As we transition and grow, we know how important feedback is to keeping us responsive to our members. Please let us know if there is something we can be doing to make your Chamber experience the best possible. Linda Hulleman, our Executive Director, can be reached at 225-6009.

Thank you so much for your membership. It has been a productive and fun ride that just keeps getting better!

This year's Shoot-Out is presented by R&R Realty, Iowa Health and Waste Management.  A line-up like that promises you a hip-roarin' good time! A special thank you must go out to Texas Roadhouse who has VERY generously agreed to provide a full chuckwagon barbeque lunch for all.

There are plenty of chances for your business to participate - so don't wait. Please call (225-6009) or e-mail the Chamber office to find out more about all kinds of sponsorships, donations, and volunteer opportunities. Just ask anyone who's participated in the past - this one IS the BEST in the west!

Business of the MonthPrecision

Precision Development, Inc.

We're all familiar with the catchphrase 'out of the box thinking'.  For 11 years, Precision has been delivering what doesn't come in boxes - boxed software, that is.  While software products are available that fit a variety of businesses, there are many processes and even entire businesses that do not fit well to the predetermined design of off-the-shelf products.

That's where Precision shines.  Entrepreneurs and progressive businesses throughout the Midwest have benefited from partnering with Precision to integrate innovative and efficient solutions into their way of doing business.  We take pride in delivering quality software that benefits everyone, from the person conducting transactions, to the exception handler, to management, through to customers and suppliers.  By leveraging our tremendous depth of business experience (18 years on average), our staff listens and recommends in business terms, not technical terms.  That's not to say we're not skilled technically - we're very capable with the most current Microsoft development technologies - we simply focus on the business challenge first so that we deliver value where it counts.  One of the client observations we continually receive is "I can't believe how quickly you understood all this!"

Precision is proud to grow with West Des Moines.  Since its founding in 1997 by Phil Stanislav, Precision has grown in clients and staff to our current location on Westown Parkway.  We strive to create a pleasant surprise in our office environment and in our interaction that is in sync with West Des Moines - 'Unexpected'.  (By the way, check out the new WDM commercial at http://www.wdmchamber.org/commercials/commercial.wmv).

At Precision, we stay 'fluent in the language of business'.  That's our brand promise, and our promise to those who trust in us to build their businesses.  We value the opportunity to create a software solution that reflects and boosts your business.  Give us a call!

Citizen of the YearCitizen of the Year Nominations Sought

Who Will Be #64?

It is once again time to submit nominations for this year's Citizen of the Year Awards. This will be the 64th consecutive year the West Des Moines Chamber honors a citizen deserving of the title, at the Chamber's Annual Dinner in January.  Our dynamic duo of Shawn Johnson and Coach Chow, 2007 Citizens of the Year, will be a tough act to follow - but we know many deserving people are out there - and just as worthy of a moment in the spotlight

Nominations for this distinguished award will be taken through an on-line nomination process, simply by clicking on the West Des Moines Chamber website at

Do you have a friend, neighbor, co-worker, or family member that is deserving of the honor this year? Just click on the link above and submit the name! The nomination and selection committees will be meeting after the November 1 nomination deadline to gather background information on each of the nominees and make the selection. The recipient for the 2008 award will be announced in December and honored at the WDM chamber's Annual Dinner on January 29, 2009.
Help Illuminate
West Des Moines!

WDM Parks and Recreation will roll out a brand new community festival called Illumifest on September 27th and they are inviting people to come and help illuminate West Des Moines!  The evening event, which will be held on the City/School Campus (4200 Mills Civic Parkway) from 6-10pm, will feature a number of activities for people of all ages.

People can be a part of the event by creating their own lantern during the evening, and then be a part of a special lighting ceremony that will conclude the evening.  "Our goal is to have 500 lanterns lighting up around the campus pond." event director Todd Seaman stated.  "People can decorate their own paper lantern and then everyone will receive a LED light to light it as well." he added.  The lantern making is sponsored by The Mid America Group.

IllumifestAnother key attraction of the event is a public art display of lanterns that were specially made for Illumifest by Iowa artists.  The lanterns are part of an art contest that features several lanterns created by adult and youth artists.  The art competition is funded through a grant from Prairie Meadows.  The lanterns will also be part of an auction that will help raise money for next year's contest.

Other activities include: FREE carnival rides and inflatable's, FREE hot air balloon rides, displays and demonstrations by the Chinese Association of Iowa, LIVE MUSIC by the Legacy Band which is sponsored by West Bank, a beverage garden which is sponsored by the WDM Chamber and Valley Junction Foundation, food vendors, and the lantern making and display.  The evening will conclude with a fireworks extravaganza presented by Aviva.

Mark your calendars now so you don't miss out on what will be a special evening of entertainment and fun!!

Hard HatSeptember 9 Ballot Issue

Revenue Purpose Statement

On Tuesday, September 9, voters in the West Des Moines Community School District will be asked to elect two members to serve on the Board of Education.  Incumbents Tom Suckow and Terry Tobin are running unopposed.

In addition, voters will be asked to support or deny the expenditure of sales tax funds for a variety of purposes including renovation and construction at schools throughout the district.  This ballot issue is called the "Revenue Purpose Statement."

During the 2008 session, the Iowa Legislature enacted a statewide sales tax for school infrastructure.  This will go into effect in Polk County when the local sales tax for school infrastructure expires in 2010.  As part of the new law, voters can give the Board of Education permission to allocate the sales tax funds for school district construction projects.

Currently, the district is committed to completing renovation projects at Western Hills, Crestview and Indian Hills with proceeds from the local sales tax.  If the Revenue Purpose Statement ballot issue is approved, the district would begin planning for future projects, including remodeling at Crossroads Park, Stilwell and Walnut Creek Campus.  These projects were delayed due to lack of funds from the existing sales tax.

Other priorities include:
· additional space for all-day kindergarten
· additional space for programs for special needs students
· improvements in the performing arts facility at Valley High School.
· additional building improvement needs as identified by committees of staff and parents at each school.

BulldozerAs always, action taken on the expenditure of taxpayer funds for infrastructure or other purposes would occur at School Board meetings open to the public.

Remember to vote on Tuesday, September 9.
