School is Back in Session
The 2009-2010 school year is off to a great start. This fall, the newly renovated Western Hills Elementary School and Indian Hills Junior High School have reopened. Both are exciting examples of the wonderful facility improvements that are possible through the use of sales tax dollars and the district's Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL). Crestview Elementary School is currently under renovation and will reopen in the fall of 2010. Renovations at Crossroads Park are scheduled to begin the fall of 2010. On September 8, 2009, at the time of the School Board election, the school district is asking for you to vote on the ballot measure for renewal of the PPEL. It is not a new tax, but a renewal of one that has been in place for more than 50 years. If a majority of voters approve the levy, the district will continue to receive much-needed resources for facility infrastructure improvements, technology improvements and school buses. If you have any questions, please contact me at 515-633-5111 or at narakt@wdmcs.org. Thank you for your tremendous support of our schools.

2nd Annual Illumifest Lights Up West Des Moines!
The City of West Des Moines and Veridian Credit Union will roll out the 2nd Annual Illumifest, a fall festival of light, on September 26th and people are invited to come and help illuminate West Des Moines! The evening event, which will be held on the City/School Campus (4200 Mills Civic Parkway) from 5-9 pm, will feature a number of activities for people of all ages.
People can be a part of the event by creating their own lantern during the evening, and then be a part of a special lighting ceremony and parade that will conclude the evening. "Our goal is to have 1,000 lanterns lighting up around the campus pond." event director Todd Seaman stated. "People can decorate their own paper lantern and then everyone will receive a LED light to light it as well." he added.
Other activities include: FREE carnival rides and inflatables, FREE hot air balloon rides, displays and demonstrations by the Chinese Association of Iowa, LIVE MUSIC by Brother Trucker, a beverage garden which is sponsored by the WDM Chamber and Valley Junction Foundation, food vendors, and a FREE outdoor showing of the movie Madagascar 2. The evening will conclude with a laser light and fireworks extravaganza over the campus pond.
Mark your calendars now so you don't miss out on what will be a special evening of entertainment and fun!! For more information call 222-3444 or check out the web site at www.illumifest.com. |
