January Message from 2009 President Mike Kammerer
Congratulations to Greg France and the 2008 Board of Directors for an outstanding year. Please join me in thanking Greg and all the board members for the leadership and hard work throughout the year. I am honored to be your President this year, and I feel very lucky to have an outstanding group of people who serve on the Chamber's Board of Directors. Our dedicated Board Members spend many hours advancing the vision and the mission of the Chamber and serving the business community. They, along with the many volunteers and members of the Chamber, are what make the West Des Moines Chamber great. We are entering our third year under the new Chamber structure, and each year your Chamber has grown and gotten better. 2009 promises to be another great year. Last year we submitted documentation and were awarded a three-star Accreditation by the US Chamber of Commerce. This put us in an elite group of Chambers that have gone through a very thorough evaluation of their programs. This high degree of Accreditation has set the stage for an even better Chamber for years to come. As a continuation of the process, near the end of last year, your Board of Directors completed a three year strategic plan for the Chamber. Briefly, this plan focuses on the following areas: 1. Retaining and growing membership, 2. Building the West Des Moines Chamber brand through improved programs, 3. Increasing non-dues revenue through programs and other fundraising activities, 4. Taking a more active role in representing the West Des Moines Business community in local, state and federal government activities and relations, 5. Re-evaluating our organizational structure and determining future staffing needs to assure that we have the support systems in place to serve the Chamber and its members as we grow. We plan on implementing many of these action items throughout this year. An example of success with trying different things was our November luncheon where we had a networking program. We heard many outstanding comments about this program and requests do it again. We will and hope to bring many other new and exciting programs and venues out this year. While it takes great planning and strong leadership, most importantly it takes active members to make the Chamber successful. We still have many opportunities on committees. Our committees include:
Communications
Membership Government Relations
Programs Finance Sponsorships If you do not want to be on a committee for an entire year we have three task forces: Golf Zing into Spring A-MAY-Zing Days So while Chamber serves you, you can serve it. Please volunteer. Throughout the year, if you have any questions, or if there is anything we can do for you, please contact Linda, our executive director, any Board member or me. Thank you again for being part of the West Des Moines Chamber. Mike Submitted by Mike Kammerer,

A Place for Charity in West Des Moines
Every community has those in need, and West Des Moines is no exception. It is sometimes easy to overlook the charities making differences in our community, or remain unsure how one can make their own difference with volunteerism or fundraising, but impacting the lives of others with charitable giving is within reach for us all. These are lessons learned by the members of the West Des Moines Leadership Academy (WDMLA) as they met on Thursday, December 11 at the West Des Moines Public Library. The session began with a lecture by Paul Kirpes, CEO of TPG Companies and a nationally-known expert on philanthropy and fundraising, who taught the dynamics of philanthropic giving among organizations, businesses and individuals. Did you know that, unlike the stock market, the amount of monetary giving in this nation has increased every single year-except one (1987, when it remained constant)? And despite the wealth of major corporations, the vast majority of giving comes from individuals? Kirpes revealed many surprising facts about philanthropy and gave Academy members a plan for successful fundraising. The second half of the Academy session was a series of roundtable discussions moderated by Libby Jacobs (Director of Community Relations at Principal Financial Group, former Iowa legislator and West Des Moines' 2008 Citizen of the Year). Academy members met with representative from five charitable and philanthropic organizations: · Jane Flanagan, Hospice of Central Iowa · Sue Paterson-Nielson, West Des Moines Human Services · Lynnae Hentzen, Center on Sustainable Communities · Kaye Lozier and Ashley Canney, Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines · Vicky Long-Hill, Eddie Davis Community Center Some Academy members discovered these organizations for the first time in this session, and came away with a new understanding of the charitable work happening in West Des Moines. The final segment of the session was a discussion of the class project, which the Academy class is expected to develop, plan and execute as part of their training. All 30 members of this inaugural class are leaders in their own right, and many ideas were shared and discussed. It will be interesting to see what the Class of 2009 chooses to take on! Next month's session will be the first of the Academy's leadership development sessions. Mitch Matthews will be presenting "The Generation Gap 2.0" to the group; for more information visit www.akickinthepants.com.

Two Grants Received for Projects in Valley Junction
The City of West Des Moines has recently received two grants that will help with efforts in Valley Junction. MidAmerican Energy awarded $13,290 to the City of West Des Moines to help fund a $50,000 market study for Historic Valley Junction. Other funding sources for the project are coming from the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED) and Main Street Iowa. In 2005, the consulting firm, Downtown Professionals Network (DPN) and Arnett Muldrow were hired by IDED and Main Street to complete a market study for Valley Junction and other Main Street programs. The report was completed and work has been done based on the report. Now, IDED and Main Street are poised to take the next step in further understanding Valley Junction's market and have chosen eight Main Street communities, including Valley Junction, for an "Intermediate Market Analysis" by the same consulting firms. This grant will allow DPN/Arnett Muldrow to go even further in their study by adding additional research, data and analysis, branding, and implementation components. The State Historical Society of Iowa recently awarded $100,000 to the City of West Des Moines through a Historic Sites Preservation Grant for the rehabilitation of Historic City Hall at 137 5th Street in Valley Junction, one of the two buildings within the City that is on the National Historic Register. The City bought the building this past year and has hired an architect to help with the plans to restore the building in a historically sensitive manner. The Historic Valley Junction Foundation will eventually move their offices to this location. Classrooms and meeting rooms will also be provided in the building, as well as an office and storage space for the handyman service provided by West Des Moines Human Services.
