Weeks' Itinerary
2010 Edition: March 22, 2010 |
|
Dear SPRING WDM Chamber Member:
I'm coming to you remotely from Spain this week as I am visiting a friend on leave from deployment in Iraq. Though I am not in the office, I am with you in spirit as many of you return to the office rejuvinated by the fact that it is officially SPRING.
This week, the Chamber has a slew of committee meetings as well as some great networking events on deck. Tuesday at 11:30 AM, join the Chamber Ambassadors for a ribbon cutting celebration and lunch at the new Jordan Creek Maid-Rite. Then take a trip up north to Speedpro Imaging for Thrusday night's Business After Hours event where you can have your photo taken with a "Celebrity".
I am so excited to finally be able to write about Spring activities. The Chamber will once again partner with WDM Parks & Rec this year to bring you the 3rd Annual Zing into Spring 5K Fun Run/Walk. This year's race will be held on Saturday, May 22nd. We are already taking registrations, so if you are a planner, go ahead and register by clicking here.
See you all next week!
Julie

About the Peek of the Weeks':
Each week, we'll give you a little peek. A peek at something, someone, or somewhere within the WDM Chamber membership. It's your job to figure out what we're peeking at! The first person to e-mail Linda identifiying the correct business and object will win $5.00. An additional $5.00 will be added each week until someone guesses correctly. |
TRUE LIFE: I ATTENDED BUSINESS BOOT CAMP
Attending the WDM Chamber's Business Boot Camp was a smart move on my part! In only 90 minutes, I learned a lot about politically savviness and why it's not just for campaign trails and election speeches; it's an important quality to master in an office environment as well.
Why? Well, if you've ever studied politicians, you know that they understand how to utilize power, organization and decision making to achieve objectives. When you transfer that same dynamic into the workplace - you can affect change and persuade others to your own point of view.
Melynda DeCarlo of the Meyvn Group did a terric job explaining how an organization's political climate determines who has authority and influence regardless of what position that person may hold within the organization.
What did I learn? I learned that those who collaborate have a greater impact and are recognized formally and informally as leaders. I learned what barriers to collaboration I might be employing that prevent me from achieving all I can achieve.
It was well worth my time and when I think about how little it cost, it was a great bargain. Because I attended the Business Boot Camp I will be a more effective leader and a better manager and employee.
To top it all off, I met some new people and I'm already enjoying the new relationships I made at this powerful event! I can't wait to learn about the Power of Language which is the topic for the next Boot Camp. Register now!

The City of West Des Moines is taking part in a competition between several US cities for a spot in a recently announced Google pilot program entitled "Fiber for Communities." Google plans to install new Internet connections with data transfer rates faster than 1 Gigabit per second in the selected communities.
The application for the Google program is due this Friday, March 26, after which Google will choose one or more cities for the project.
This is going to be a highly competititeve process! To be successful as a city, we need to show evidence of citizen support for the project. That's where you come in.
There are three levels of support the City is asking interested residents to demonstrate, ranging from answering a few questions to nominating West Des Moines through the Google website. Please take a look at the options below and pick the right fit for you!
1)Answer a few quick questions regarding the project on this website. Your responses will be submitted with our application.
2) Become a fan of the City of West Des Moines on Facebook and join the discussion about Google Fiber!
3) Visit the Google Fiber website and let them know you support the City of West Des Moines' application by nominating West Des Moines for this project!
Thanks in advance to everyone who is willing to help in the City's effort to bring this pilot program to West Des Moines. |
A-MAY-ZING DAYS EVE JUST GOT BETTER
This year's Citizen of the Year Award winner will be celebrated with a lovely outdoor reception on the patio of West Des Moines City Hall. The reception will be held in the evening on Friday, April 30th, and will feature cocktails and musical entertainment. The event will also serve as the kick-off to A-May-Zing Days, a month long series of events celebrating the City of West Des Moines.
Traditionally, the Citizen of Year Award recipient has been recognized at our Annual Dinner in January. However, this year we're making sure the Citizen gets celebrated in a fresh new way.
