WDM
Chamber Officers
CHAIR
TREASURER
|

|
|

I
absolutely love
the holidays
even though my
stress level
seems to
escalate
significantly
during the month
of December.
Even with all of
the pomp and
circumstance,
however, I seem
to get more
reflective and
passionate about
the things that
truly matter
with each
passing year.
I
have been
honored to be
the Chair of
your WDM Chamber
this past year.
I am grateful to
be part of an
organization
with such
quality members,
such a qualified
staff and such a
committed board
of directors.
While many
chambers have
suffered during
these tough
economic times,
our
chamber has
continued to
flourish. I'm
grateful for the
new members that
have joined the
WDM Chamber in
2011 and the
ribbon cuttings
we were able to
host.....49 to
be
exact....that's
an incredible
commitment from
our outstanding
Ambassadors.
I'm also proud
our Chamber has
such strong
contingents: the
WMDLA, New View
and the
Development
Connection.
Most
important of
all, however, is
how blessed I
feel to have
developed so
many friendships
through this
organization.
Many of these
relationships
have been in
place for years,
but many more
are new and
continue to
bring an added
dimension to my
life. So.....THANK
YOU....for
all that you
have given me,
not just this
past year, but
for all of the
years that I
have been
involved with
this illustrious
group.

Of
course, don't
think I'm going
to fade away
once I pass the
gavel to my dear
friend and your
2012 Chair, Rose
Breuss, one of
the most
qualified and
special people I
know. She will
lead the WDM
Chamber with
knowledge, poise
and a great
enthusiasm. I
also want to
thank Mike
Kammerer who
will depart the
exec board at
the end of the
year. Mike has
been an
incredible role
model and has
given more time
and energy to
this group than
any of us can
imagine. Now he
might actually
be able to take
his lovely bride
on a vacation.
Love
and appreciate
your family
and friends;
have a safe
and wonderful
holiday
season. I
hope you all
"kick butt and
take names" in
2012 and have
the most
successful
year ever!!!

On
November 19, the
current West Des
Moines Leadership
Academy benefited
from a unique
learning
experience
courtesy of
Catholic
Charities.
During
this session,
which focused on
non-profit
participation and
understanding
poverty, the class
went through
Catholic
Charities'
thought-provoking
poverty
simulation. The
simulation is
designed to help
participants begin
to understand what
it might be like
to live in a
typical low-income
family trying to
survive from month
to month.
Participants
assume the roles
of families facing
various stages of
poverty either
with or without
earned income or
financial
assistance. Each
simulated family
is tasked to
arrange for basic
necessities and
shelter during the
course of four
15-minute weeks.
Class member
feedback included
the following:
- The
simulation was
great. It
changed the way
I look at people
in general and
the struggles we
all go through.
It really took
down my wall of
how I view
people.
- The
simulation has a
direct relation
to my current
workplace.
- It
provided
perspective on
the challenges
of being poor
and changed my
opinion on
people
struggling.
- I
can definitely
apply what I
learned and it
certainly
affects how I
will spend my
time
volunteering. I
think it was an
excellent
exercise and one
that all people
should consider
going through.

Thanks
to Catholic
Charities for
facilitating this
experience for the
Academy once
again.
Prior
to the simulation,
the class enjoyed
a short
presentation from
Dan Raedeker,
Community
Investment
Associate with the
Greater Des Moines
Community
Foundation. Dan
discussed the
foundation's
efforts to grow
philanthropy in
Greater Des Moines
and provided
suggestions for
class members
interested in
boosting their
involvement in the
community. He
directed that
successful
nonprofit board
members understand
the best practices
of nonprofits,
have a passion for
the work of the
nonprofit they
represent and
serve, and take
time to understand
and evaluate their
role so that they
remain engaged. An
ideal board member
commits to attend
meetings, helps to
articulate and
promote the
mission of the
nonprofit, and
continuously
shares their
experience and
expertise in ways
that are valuable
to the group.

Academy
members then had
the opportunity to
visit with several
local
organizations and
find out more
about their needs
and priorities in
the Greater Des
Moines area. The
goal of this
portion of the
class was to help
class members
think more
strategically
about their role
in the community
and connect them
to board
membership or
volunteer
opportunities that
abound in our
area.
