Tammy ClineYesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery

Today is a Gift.....That's why we call it the Present!

This is one of my very favorite sayings and seemed appropriate as we begin a new year.  As I become your Chair for 2011, I've been reflecting on my tenure with this board which began in the late '90's.  I'm going to coin my reflections as That was Then.....This is Now.

Location - a three-room office tucked away in an unidentifiable commercial office building behind the Tavern.  Offices within City Hall and recognizable monument signage for all to see.

Staff - an executive director.  A President, Director of Chamber Operations, Project Manager and Membership Coordinator.

Accreditation - something necessary for a teacher, doctor or therapist to practice their tradeYour Chamber achieved a 3 star accreditation by the US Chamber on its first application.  The top tier of a 5 star accreditation is on our future agenda.

New View - something you would get when WDM annexed  new land.  The WDM Chamber's group specifically geared to the young professionals in our community.

Leadership Academy - something offered by the Greater DM Partnership and major corporations.  An established and respected program offered through the WDM Chamber.

Development Connection - known as the WDM Development Corporation, this group had been founded by community leaders several decades ago but its purpose had lost focus over the years.  An aggressive group dedicated to working with the City to promote economic development in WDM.  Also responsible for a Job Expo, Bus Tour and support of the new WDM Incubator to assist small businesses.

Annual Dinner - a Thursday night event in late January recognizing Businesses of the Year, Citizen of the Year and a bevy a lengthy speeches.  The details are still being worked out, but get ready for something entirely different and BIG TIME FUN!!!

I could enumerate many more changes, but I think you get the gist that we've been on "warp speed" for quite some time now.  (HISTORY)   We know that 2011 will be our best year yet (PRESENT) and sincerely value each and every one of our members. (GIFT)  I'm not going to look ahead (FUTURE) as many years as I did to go back to my beginning years on this chamber board.....mainly because I'll be getting pretty close to receiving my Medicare card.  UFFDA!

The Big Deal
Yeah, It's a BIG Deal!

The West Des Moines Chamber Programming Committee, led by Chairperson Edye Beckerman, is thrilled to announce plans for the biggest EVER event to hit the West Des Moines Chamber calendars.  Mark your the date of April 1 for "THE BIG DEAL".  Yes, it is  April Fool's Day - and you'd be a fool to miss this event!

What's "The Big Deal"??   Think Master of Ceremonies Gene Meyer leading us all in an evening of black jack, poker, craps, roulette, eating, drinking, prizes, auction items...you get the idea.  A ton of fun!  This is THE not to miss event of 2011.

There are lots of ways to be involved with this event and we look forward to talking to you about them in the coming weeks.  Right now, mark your calendars for Friday, April 1.  The place you will want to be is the Val Air Ballroom in West Des Moines!

For more information, contact Edye Beckerman, Director of Sales & Marketing, Lambert & Ewers Smoked Meats at edye@4hams.com.

WDMLAWDMLA Class Gains Insight on Managing Conflict

On December 16, 2010, the West Des Moines Leadership Academy class had an amazing opportunity to attend the Conflict Management Session presented by Tero International.    Also included in this session was the opportunity to hear from leaders, officers, and elected officials from West Des Moines regarding the government and economic development of the City.

During the Conflict Management session presented by Rowena Crosbie, we learned about the definition of conflict, Leadership 12.10 onethe challenges with conflict, and how we as leaders can utilize methods of resolving conflict.  We also played an exciting game learning about negotiation and how to effectively strategize ideas as leaders. The four steps to negotiation are as follows:

  1. Separate people from the problem
  2. Identify the underlying interests
  3. Generate options
  4. Use outside criteria to make a decision

In the later part of the afternoon, we learned about plans for the future of West Des Moines and the development of the City.  The panel members included Clyde Evans, Director ofleadership 12.10 two Community and Economic Development, Gary Scott, Director of Parks and Recreation, Chris Voggesser, President of the West Des Moines Chamber and Development Connection, and Russ Trimble, West Des Moines City Council Member.  It was very interesting to learn the goals of the leadership and how they plan to highlight West Des Moines. The goal is to continue to grow West Des Moines as major landmark for business opportunities and continue to create a presence on a national level.  We also learned as leaders, we are the eyes and ears of West Des Moines.  We should continue to listen for opportunities and pass them along to elected officials as well.

That evening, we attended the Holiday Reception with West Des Moines government officials and alumni at the Hy-Vee leadership 12.10 threeConference Center.  The evening was a great time to hear about holiday traditions and catch-up with others. The WDMLA class is looking forward to our next session in January 2011.  We wish everyone a Happy New Year!
