The Historic Valley Junction Foundation, a nationally recognized Main Street District, was established to advance the growth and development of Valley Junction into a dynamic commercial, residential and tourist area. For more information call (515) 222-3642 or visit www.valleyjunction.com. The West Des Moines Historical Society keeps alive an active interest in the history of West Des Moines by acquiring and preserving articles and materials that establish and illustrate the heritage and growth of the community. The organization has restored the Jordan House, the living quarters of a founding family, and the Bennett School, a one-room schoolhouse dating from around 1926, into museums. With a humble beginning as a railroad community in the 1890s, West Des Moines has developed into one of the most thriving cities in the state of Iowa. More than 100 years ago, Valley Junction drew crowds to boarding houses, drugstores and banks. When the city’s founding father, James C. Jordan, settled in the area, he became a legislative leader and was a dominant force in governmental affairs. His home, Jordan House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses the West Des Moines Historical Society. CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS Three of the larger area organizations in West Des Moines are the Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club. The civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community is the focus for the Lions Club. Participating in community projects, the Lions are committed to American Diabetes Research, Camp Hertko, drug abuse prevention, helping to fight blindness, and hosting an honor banquet for seniors from Dowling and Valley high schools. For more information visit www.iowalions.org. The Kiwanis Club is composed of business and professional leaders who serve the youth and community. Volunteer activities support the library, the Human Services Department, high schools and Kiwanis Park. For more information visit www.kiwanis.org.
CITY-SCHOOL CAMPUS One of the partnerships that emerged among the leaders of the community was the city’s joint venture with the West Des Moines Community School District to form the City-School Campus. Housed on more than 150 acres, the complex includes a Law Enforcement Center, Library, Learning Resource Center, Historic Bennett Schoolhouse, Jordan Creek Elementary, Valley Southwoods Freshman High School, a new City Hall and the new Valley Stadium. With the support of the residents, the campus dream has become a reality.
